Many do not know about him, but William J. Colvill was an important figure in the U.S. Civil War and can be found in our town.

William J. Colvill was born in 1830 and died in 1905.  Colonel William Colvill was best known for leading Minnesota volunteers to the battle of Gettysburg in 1863.  He was born in New York.  In 1854, he moved to Red Wing, MN to practice law.  He was in the Civil War and was in the some of the most famous battles such as the battle of Bull Run and Gettysburg.  He was shot in battle but was not killed.

The finally resting place and memorial of William Colvill is in the Cannon Falls cemetery along with a statue and a used civil war cannon.  The finally resting grounds are located off Highway 19 across from the High School.
