Lights Out

Kennedy H.

Dave Peterson Director of Facilities / Maintenance Cannon Falls Schools

On February 2nd, 2017 at 3:50 pm, the lights went out at Cannon Falls Elementary school. Some kids were concerned.  Some were glad they didn’t have to do their computer work.  What was happening?

This investigative reporter interviewed Dave Petersen, Cannon Falls Director of Facilities and Maintenance, to figure out what was going on.

Mr. Peterson reported, “We’re under a curtailment which means the power company calls us to tell us to shut the power off for an hour. They ask us to shut the power off to save power so we can save money. It’s a saving on our district’s monthly energy bill.”

“Xcel Energy notifies us by calling us or texting us. How often we turn off the power is up to the power company, sometimes it’s just a test and sometimes it’s because we need to save power.”

This reporter is glad that the district is saving money.

The next time the power is shut off at our school, you don’t need to be alarmed.  It’s just a way for us to save money. Dave Petersen has it all under control.
